This connection, we believe, arises from the intricate interplay between vine stress responses and the unique nutrient profiles of our igneous-based soils. During the 1800s, when iron ploughshares and mouldboards were commonplace, the quality of the soil in our local Woodham Ferrers region was characterized by the number of horses needed to till the soil. From the low-lying plains, aptly termed “one horse” land, to the elevated terrains or “three horse land”.
