INTRODUCING Horse LAND Wines
We’ve uncovered a fascinating correlation between a historical measure of our land’s quality and the depth of flavours within our grapes.
Welcome to the new Missing Gate Vineyard website — we’d love your feedback, so please contact us with any suggestions.

This connection, we believe, arises from the intricate interplay between vine stress responses and the unique nutrient profiles of our igneous-based soils.
During the 1800s, when iron ploughshares and mouldboards were commonplace, the quality of the soil in our local Woodham Ferrers region was characterized by the number of horses needed to till the soil.
From the low-lying plains, aptly termed “one horse” land, to the elevated terrains or “three horse land”.

All about
MISSING GATE VINEYARD
We are a family-run business with a background in farming and food technology.
OUR ESSEX vineyard, cultivated for generations
Since 2018, we have pursued a long-term vision for our vineyard, investing in and experimenting with a diverse range of grape varieties. These were carefully chosen for their resilience to disease, adaptability to a changing climate, and potential to produce outstanding wines. This meticulous and rewarding process has allowed us to select vines that not only yield exceptional wines but also thrive sustainably, in harmony with our unique environment.
At Missing Gate, we are dedicated to crafting world-class wines without ever compromising on quality or sustainability.
Drawing on our expertise in food processing technologies (food-physics.com), we have embraced innovative green solutions to enhance grape yields and elevate the quality of our wines. This integration of cutting-edge technology with traditional winemaking reflects our commitment to pushing boundaries while respecting the environment.
Inspired by our initial success, we’ve continued to expand the vineyard, focusing on creating exceptional English wines that showcase the unique character of our lands.
Known as the ‘salt-marsh stretch of Essex, ’ our family has been growing crops on our clay-based farm in the Crouch Valley for three generations.
A knowledge of the land and a family passion for wine combined to create the Missing Gate Vineyard in 2018, giving over traditional arable land to plant our first vines.
As a family working together to create a business, it’s been hugely rewarding, and we’re proud to join the growing family of neighbouring vineyards on the ‘Essex Riviera’ making a name for still English wines.

What People Are Saying
“A pure, robin song of red fruit, pulsing with life. It’s bright and cocky and full of energy. the wine is slender and delicate. It’s gorgeous. And it may well have a longer life than I’ve indicated”
-Tamlyn Currin, Three Horse Land Pinot Noir 2022
"A concentrated, exotically fruited 2022 Pinot Blanc from Missing Gate, with a huge squeeze of sweet lemon rind, dried pineapple and creamy peach meeting juicy pear and a prominent, if sympathetic toasty oak framing. Another vintage that shows the potential for bold, enveloping Pinot Blanc here, this is well worth trying for anyone seeking out a different expression of the grape."
- Tom Hewson on Pinot Blanc 2022
“What a wonderful day out. Our tour guide Theo, was incredibly knowledgeable, friendly, and patient. Our group of eight came away with a much deeper appreciation of wine. The wine tasting after the tour again made a whole new experience. The wines and food were excellent. All the staff so friendly. Looking forward to taking our extended family along next time”
- Loraine Carling-Hooper
“The palate is supple and wonderfully bright, this is luminous lemon bedded in nutty, gently oaky smoothness. This strikes a lovely balance and shines with a streak of brilliant freshness. ”
— Anne Krebiehl, Sauvignon Blanc 2022
A bit of an ice-queen Chardonnay. An elegant, aloof wine that feels as if it's white linen ironed to a blade. A whisper of oak-spice trapped in steel. It's a lemon-etched, stone-edged, coiled-up, taut slip of a wine. Lime, salt and spice.
- Tamlyn Currin on Chardonnay 2022
“Booked a wine tasting afternoon on Saturday 30th August — what a lovely experience. We were greeted and seated at our table with a beautiful charcuterie board. We were given wines to choose from, and the ones we selected were superb. We had excellent service from one staff member, Phoebe, who was very knowledgeable about the wines and the vineyard itself. The atmosphere was very relaxing.”
